Take the moment
I am in school right now and I don’t feel like I have time to even know who I am truly. Do you ever feel like that? Like you are doing a lot, saying a lot of things to a lot of people, and then you come to the point where you’re alone and it stops you in your tracks. It seems I have about one of those a day at this point. There have obviously been a lot of negatives during the last year, but the greatest for me would be the loss of mental focus and clarity. Ever since I had Covid I feel like I cannot be fully present in many moments of my life. They seem to slip by, and I have very little memory of them. Even the cool memories, like releasing a music video, don’t feel great because I cannot fully slow the moment down and be there.
Let’s read something together and take some time with it. Don’t be afraid to let this stop you in your tracks:
“Maybe the moment is all there is. Maybe I should just gather my clamshells and be quiet. The exquisite experience of joy—when I am completely consumed by a pleasurable activity such as conversation with good friends or good food or laughing with my children—is certainly one of the moment. But for some reason, I and many of my fellow travelers are not satisfied with the moment. The Now isn’t enough. We want to go beyond the moment. We want to build systems and patterns and memories that connect moment to moment to eternity. We long to be part of the Infinite.” ― Alan Lightman, Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine
I’m not sure what to think about all of this. I just want to tell you that it is okay to stop working today. And not in the typical American way. I mean, it is okay to stop. All of it. All of the worrying and stressing and even stop chasing your dreams for a moment. That is so important. I think we have a really unhealthy idea of what it means to be successful today. Just stop all of it and breathe as deeply as you can. That’s what I am going to do today. And that is all I am going to do today. And that’s okay.
